Inducted into the Appaloosa Racing Hall of Fame in 1988, Whats Up Ghost -- bred and first owned by Mrs. J.E. Baker of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, -- racked up an impressive list of achievements in his 13-year lifetime. In 1970, Whats Up Ghost was named top two-year-old sprint gelding and won the 3rd annual Cricket Bars Futurity over 29 other contenders. He also won the Texas Futurity at Sunland Park and placed at the World Wide Futurity in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Ralph Henley of Wagoner, Oklahoma, then purchased Whats Up Ghost. The gelding continued to run at the front of the pack, being named the top four-years-old-and-older gelding in 1972 and 1974 after being purchased by Nancy and Richard Green of Sherwood, Oregon. He again won that title in 1976 after having been sold to Ben Mears, Jr. of West Alexandria, Ohio. He was the first Appaloosa turf champion at River Downs in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1976. Whats Up Ghost won over $44,424 during his race career in addition to a bronze medallion in 1974 and bronze superior achievement certificates in 1975 and 1976. {This article and accompanying photograph were originally published in the Appaloosa Journal, March 1998, Vol 52, No. 3, "Appaloosa Bloodlines: Whats Up Ghost," and are used here by permission.} Copyright © 1998 Appaloosa Horse Club.
